Dr Ben Wright is a highly qualified consultant medical psychotherapist. He was appointed as a consultant psychiatrist in medical psychotherapy at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) in 2004, where he provided expert care and treatment to patients for 18 years. He now holds an honorary consultant contract with ELFT as part of his ongoing teaching and training commitments.
Throughout his time at ELFT, Dr Ben demonstrated his commitment to improving access to psychotherapy. He established the Newham National IAPT demonstration site and served as the Lead Clinician from 2005 to 2010, providing supervision to senior psychotherapists and focused on providing care to people with complex difficulties that were not recovering.
He later created a local ADHD service and a program for people with treatment-resistant OCD and BDD. From 2012 to 2022, he took over the clinical leadership of the Richmond Wellbeing Service and successfully integrated IAPT and Primary Care Liaison teams to create a highly effective and efficient service.
Dr Ben has maintained his clinical practice throughout his career, offering assessment and treatment for various mental health conditions, particularly those who were not recovering as expected. He has extensive experience in treating trauma, functional disorders, OCD, depression and other common mental health issues. He offers Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), EMDR (including standard EMDR, blind-to-therapist, and other protocols), and psychosexual therapies, allowing patients to choose the best approach for their needs. With over 30 years of experience in mental health, Dr Ben is a dedicated and skilled mental health professional.
Dr Ben has extensive experience in teaching and training medical students, psychiatric trainees, postgraduate students and staff. He receives consistently strong positive feedback from participants.
He has experience setting up a psychotherapy training framework for psychiatry trainees and a psychotherapy supervision framework for psychotherapy teams.
He regularly provides teaching and training at international and national events. He was appointed as a Visiting Assistant Professor at NOVA Medical School, Lisbon in February 2020 and has been teaching the international MSc in mental health since 2017.
In 2022 he was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary’s, University of London, where he teaches and mentors medical students. He regularly teaches on psychotherapy, Trauma/PTSD, CBT, OCD and other anxiety disorders.
Dr Wright is dedicated to delivering high-quality care. With extensive experience in leading multi-million-pound clinical services, delivering high-quality care to thousands of patients each year. He uses a combination of quality improvement methodologies and expert application of digital resources to ensure efficient, productive services with exceptional clinical recovery rates.
Following his experience setting up the IAPT National Demonstration site in Newham in 2005, with great success. He played a pivotal role in creating an integrated IAPT and Primary Care Liaison service in Richmond, leading the transition to a new clinical model that was highly respected and valued by patients, carers, and General Practitioners.
Under Dr Wright's leadership, Richmond Wellbeing Service achieved high access levels, improved recovery rates from 35% to 56%, and low waiting times. In addition, Dr Wright introduced a quality framework and service user engagement framework, including a Service User Forum and Service User Champions. The then Chair of ELFT Marie Gabriel, recognised the outstanding improvement in the service with "The Chair's Award." He also expertly led the service through the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling a successful shift to virtual working with no interruption to providing high-quality care.
East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) is a large healthcare organization with over 7,000 employees and a budget of over £400 million. Dr Wright was the Clinical Digital Health Leader at ELFT from 2012 to 2022. During their time in this role, they successfully led various digital transformation initiatives, including initiating a comprehensive digital clinical safety program (DCB0160), a staff digital engagement and training framework (Digital Champions), and a program to replace the primary clinical information system. Dr Wright co-authored the organisation's digital strategies during this time. He led several transformation domains, including a patient digital inclusion program, electronic prescribing, digital dictation, and virtual consultations. He originally commissioned and designed the specifications of the Clinical system now known as IAPTUS.
